Great Wall of China (Badaling) is the section with the longest history, the richest culture, the most magnificent architecture and the most spectacular scenery.

What to expect at the Badaling Great Wall of ChinaOriginally built along the ridge in 1505, Great Wall of China (Badaling) was opened to the public in 1958. Located in the Yanqing District, 60 kilometers northwest of Beijing, it was rebuilt for more than 80 years in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). Its elevation is up to 1,050 meters high. The south side offers 7 watchtowers while the north side has 12 ones. Compared to the north side, the south one is less touristy. The north one is harder to climb. Also called “ Platform for Viewing the Sunrise”, the eighth watchtower of the north side is the highest of the watchtowers.
Great Wall of China (Badaling) offers 43 watchtowers. The sixth one of the north side is the largest one. With a plane of trapezoid, the city wall of Great Wall of China (Badaling) is 6 to 9 meters high. Its bottom is 6.5 to 7.5 meters wide and the top is 4.5 to 5.8 meters wide. Visitors can explore the 5 iron cannons near the entrance. There are also several passes for visitors to discover. The scenery around the Great Wall of China (Badaling) presents beautiful seasonal appearances. In addition, visitors can visit the Museum of Great Wall of China which comprehensively reflects the history, military, architecture, economy, culture, art and status of the Great Wall. The museum covers an area of 4,000 square meters. The exhibition focuses on cultural relics and specimens unearthed along the Great Wall across the country, supplemented by charts, photographs, human landscapes and models. Multimedia means such as touch screens and projectors are also used to display the Great Wall, a symbol of the Chinese nation. |
Best time to visit the Badaling Great Wall of China
The best time to visit Great Wall of China (Badaling) is in the morning as it will take you several hours to climb it in different section. The best months to visit are April, May, September and October.
How to get to the Badaling Great Wall of China
As Great Wall of China (Badaling) is located in the outskirt of Beijing, there are only a few options.
- Rent a vehicle from downtown Beijing. This is the quickest and most direct option.
- Take S2 Line Trains to the Stop of Badaling (八达岭站).
- Take Bus 877 or Bus 919 to the Great Wall of China (Badaling).

- Opening hours: 06:30 - 19:00 (April 1 - October 31); 06:00 - 19:30 (July 1 - August 31); 07:30 - 18:00 (November 1 - March 31).
- As at 8th October 2020, from April 1 to October 31, entrance pricing for Great Wall of China (Badaling) is 40 CNY per person; children between 6 years old (6 years old not included) and 18 years old (18 years old included) and the elder above 60 years old (60 years old included) are charged 20 CNY per person; from November 1 to March 31, entrance pricing for Great Wall of China (Badaling) is 35 CNY per person; children between 6 years old (6 years old not included) and 18 years old (18 years old included) and the elder above 60 years old (60 years old included) are charged 17.5 CNY per person; children under 6 years old (6 years old included) or 1.2m (1.2m included) are free of charge. - It offers Chinese and English audio-guide rental service. For the English one, the pricing is 40 CNY once. And the deposit for the audio-guide is 30 CNY per set. Visitors shall return the audio-guide by 15:00.
- Compared to other sections, Great Wall of China (Badaling) is the most touristy and most popular with Chinese visitors.
- Visitors can the chairlift at the north side (Guntiangou Parking Lot - the Eighth Tower of the North Side) and at the south side (Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall - the Fourth Tower of the South Side) for an additional fee.
- There are many fake Bus 877 the staff of which charge 80 CNY per passenger for the seating. Please take the official Bus 877 the ticket for the seating of which is only 12 CNY in cash.
- Bus 877 always takes 1.5 hours from Desheng Gate to Great Wall of China (Badaling) when the traffic is not busy. It always stops running from Desheng Gate to Great Wall of China (Badaling) at 12:00pm and from Great Wall of China (Badaling) back to Desheng Gate at 16:00pm.
