What is the Antiquarium of the Palace Museum?
Since it was opened to the public in 1958, Antiquarium of the Palace Museum has been repaired for several times. It is one of the important exhibition halls of the Palace Museum. A variety of jewels and other types of treasure are well preserved there.

What to expect at the Antiquarium of the Palace

Antiquarium of the Palace Museum is located in the eastern part of the Palace Museum. It is composed of the Yangxing Temple, the Leshou Hall and the Yihexuan Hall. It has a collection of jade, silver ware, gold ware, unique tools for royal rituals and ceremonies, royal customs, crowns, and ornaments, daily necessities and furnishings in the Forbidden City in the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912).

 

Visitors can admire gold chime, gold seals, gold books, ruyi ( an S-shaped ornamental object), gold towers, gold furnaces, gold cans, and teaset at Yangxing Temple. Imperial robes, suits of armor, phoenix coronet, gold pagodas, jade hills and ivory mats are on display at Leshou Hall. Jade pedestal which is made of jade, agate, crystal, coral, ivory, lapis lazuli, malachite and celestial globe are well preserved at Yihexuan Hall. In addition, visitors can also appreciate other kinds of jewels.

The best time to visit Antiquarium of the Palace Museum is in the morning during its opening hours except the weekends and holidays in China.

 

How to get to Antiquarium of the Palace

As the Antiquarium of the Palace Museum is located in the Forbidden City, you should know how to get to the Forbidden City first. Then, walk to the Antiquarium. The Forbidden City is in the heart of Beijing. Therefore, there are many options.

  • Rent a vehicle to the Forbidden City. This is the quickest and most direct option. Please note that there is no parking lot in the Forbidden City.
  • Take Bus 1, Bus 120, Bus 2, Bus 52, Bus 59, Bus 82, Bus 99, Sightseeing Bus 1 and 2 and Metro 1 to the Stop of Tian’anmen Dong (天安门东站). Walk to the Forbidden City.
  • Take Bus 101, Bus 103, Bus 109, Bus 58, Bus 685 and Bus 124 to the Stop of Gugong (故宫站).

Additional Antiquarium of the Palace Travel Advice

  • Opening hours for Antiquarium of the Palace Museum: 08:30 – 16:10 (April 1 – October 31); 08:30 – 15:30 (November 1 – March 31). It is closed on Mondays except the public holidays.
  • Opening hours for the Forbidden City: 08:30 – 17:00 (April 1 – October 31); 08:30 – 16:30 (November 1 – March 31). It is closed on Mondays except the public holidays
  • As Antiquarium of the Palace Museum is situated in the Forbidden City, you should enter the city first. As at 8th October 2020, from April 1 to October 31, the entrance pricing (not including the entrance to Antiquarium of the Palace Museuml and Clocks and Watches Hall) is 60 CNY per person; from November 1 to March 31, the entrance pricing (not including the entrance to Antiquarium of the Palace Museum and Clocks and Watches Hall) is 40 CNY per person; entrance pricing to Antiquarium of the Palace Museum is 10 CNY per person; Children under 1.2m (1.2m not included) is free of charge; the elder above 60 years old (60 years old included) are charged 30 CNY per person from April 1 to October 3 and 20 CNY per person from November 1 to March 31.
